The Westside varsity girls soccer team hosted the NSAA District A-5 championship game on Thursday, May 3, 2018. After senior midfielder Dani Barton’s 15th minute goal, Westside grabbed a 1-0 lead. A few moments later, in the 18th minute, Lincoln East’s Olivia Munroe found the net on the end of a cross on the ground to tie it. Westside had not won a game in which a goal was scored in the first half and the game was either tied or Westside trailed since the season opener with Papillion-La Vista South. Head coach Nathan Moseley said that halftime came at the right time for the Warriors.
“We just talked about how Lincoln East had grabbed the momentum at the end of the first half,” Moseley said. “We just talked about what it was going to take to match that energy, and I think the girls did it. They came out in the second half and they were fired up.”
Twenty-three minutes into the second half, Westside earned a corner kick. Sylvia Fehr sent it in, and Emma Wilson scored her sixth goal of the year to push Westside ahead of the Spartans. The win earned the Warriors their seventh NSAA Girls Soccer State Tournament berth since 2010 and their 15th since the turn of the century. Coach Moseley said they have to give it their all.
“It’s wide open this year. It could be anybody’s tourney,” Moseley said. “We’re going to keep working. This wasn’t our best game. Our best game is still ahead of us.”
Westside will play in the 2018 NSAA Class A Girls Soccer State Tournament at Creighton University’s Morrison Stadium next weekend. The date, time, and opponent will be determined this weekend.
