The Westside varsity boys soccer team hosted the NSAA District A-3 championship game on Thursday, May 3, 2018. The match went into a penalty kick shootout, but Westside prevailed 2-1 (5-4). After senior midfielder Marvin Ramirez’s 44th minute goal, Westside took a 1-0 lead over Papillion-La Vista South. But Andreas Ellingsen was there in a scuffle in the 66th minute to tie it. When nothing came of the next 34 minutes of action, the match went into a penalty kick shootout. Senior goalkeeper Griffin Trude said it was important to stay poised.
“It’s definitely nerve-wracking,” Trude said. “You always want to be the one that gets it done and makes the save. I’m just glad my guys stepped up and were able to get it done.”
The win earned Warriors their sixth appearance in the tournament since 2010, missing just the 2011, 2013, and 2015 seasons. After coming up short in overtime of the 2017 state championship game, Trude said that the Warriors are eager to get back to it.
“We feel confident for sure,” Trude said. “We’ve still got targets on our back, but we’re going in hoping to get a state championship.”
Westside will return next weekend at Morrison Stadium. The time, place, and opponent will be determined this weekend.
