“Nope, absolutely not! That’s Trude territory!”
It rang from the northeast side of Collin Stadium after senior goalkeeper Griffin Trude, who recorded his ninth clean sheet of the season to hold off Omaha South in the Metro Conference Tournament championship, stopped a penalty kick from Mauricio Felix-Alvarado with three minutes left to seal the title.
Westside took a trip to 24th and L Sts. to take on Omaha South in the Metro Conference Tournament championship game on Wednesday, April 11th, 2018. Behind senior midfielder Sam Mormino’s 74th minute goal on the end of a Marvin Ramirez corner kick, Westside stopped the Packers with a 1-0 win.
“The goal was a great ball from Marvin,” Mormino said. “I was just in the right spot at the right time to put it in.”
The win over previously undefeated Omaha South was good for Westside’s third team Metro Conference championship plaque of the school year. The varsity boys soccer team joined the likes of the NSAA State runner-up boys swimming and diving as well as the state champion girls basketball team. But Mormino said they are not done yet.
“This just puts us one step closer to what our goal is at the end of the season-a state championship,” Mormino said.
