The Westside varsity basketball teams will take the short trip to see the Burke Bulldogs on Friday, January 12, 2018, beginning at 5:15 p.m. The Bulldog ladies, who are 1-4 in their last five, roll into the matchup with a 5-6 record while Westside, who is 9-1 in their last ten, come in with a 12-2 record. The Bulldog boys, however, come in the wake of a Metro Conference Tournament final appearance and hold an 11-2 record while Westside is 4-6.
The Burke girls varsity basketball team has struggled after getting out to a strong start that included a short three game winning streak. Because they do not have someone that averages double digits in any stat, the Bulldogs do not have one stand out player. To support their team effort, Burke averages 8.8 assists per game to their average of 17 made baskets, per MaxPreps.
The Westside girls are coming off a superlative winter break where they achieved second place in the Nike Tournament of Champions and won the Metro Holiday Tournament in commanding fashion. They are led by a host of unselfish guards in Ella Wedergren, Ryley Nolin, and Quinn Weidemann, who compliment Jasmine-McGinnis Taylor in the paint. The girls will square off to begin the night at Omaha Burke.
In the later portion of the evening, the Burke boys are looking to bounce back from a loss in the Metro Holiday Tournament final to Omaha Central. The triple threat trio of Shereef Mitchell, Xavier Watts, and David Moreano average a combined 47 points per game. They’re complemented by the size of Chris Honz and Chris Hickman who are both listed above 6’5” and average a combined five rebounds a game. The Bulldogs are hungry, and Westside is their next test.
The Warriors gained a win over then fourth ranked Bellevue West to open the Metro Holiday Tournament, but were knocked out by Burke by way of a 62-49 score the last time they met. The duo of Jadin Booth and Chase Thompson lead the way with a combined 35.4 points per game to help the Warriors to their four wins thus far.
The Bulldogs and Warriors will face off on Friday, January 12, 2018, beginning at 5:15 p.m. Follow along with Westside Wired on Twitter and watch for a recap on the website following the games.
